High capacity relays that support energy management (Application examples -Charging station series-)

This article introduces relay roles and product information focusing on charging station use.

What is a charging station?

A charging station plays an important role in supplying electricity to electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV). Relays used for the DC side (for switching direct current loads) of charging stands are required to provide high capacity DC cutoff capabilities and high reliability since they are used as safety cutoff relays in the event of defects and failures of a vehicle’s battery and charging system. In addition, relays used for the AC side (for switching alternating current loads) of charging station are required to provide high capacity AC cutoff capabilities and high reliability since they are used as safety cutoff relays for power grids to prevent anomalies in charging stands from impacting commercial power supply circuits. Next, let's examine these applications in more detail.

Relay roles and product information

(1) AC side safety cutoff

Relays are used for safety cutoff purposes for the AC side power grid of a charging station. When an abnormal current is generated, it is important to securely cut the current so that it doesn't impact the charger or DC side power supply. High capacity relays are required as safety measures for protecting such electric power systems.

Proposal for engineers!!

Simply incorporating one Panasonic 2a1b type HE-S relay in your system allows you to easily create safety cutoff and contact welding monitoring circuits as additional safety measures.

(One HE-S relay can check two lines, but two are required for circuits using 3-phase four lines.)

(2) DC side safety cutoff

If defects and failures occur with the batteries and charging systems, then it is necessary to immediately stop the supply of power. High capacity relays can securely cut the power and are effective safety measures.
